Music has always been a vital part of Jewish life, feeding the Jewish soul in times of heartbreak,  carrying us through times of change, and expanding our joy through songs of praise and ascent. In this four-part series, we will explore how Jewish music, from ancient to contemporary times, can enrich our lives. Each session will involve text study, experiential learning, and live singing.

Session 4: Singing Ourselves Home: The Magic of the Hebrew Chant

In this final session, we will explore the teachings of Rabbi Shefa Gold on the power of utilizing Jewish song/text as a form of chant. Using practices such as repetition and being with and moving towards whatever arises within, we will investigate what’s possible when we allow the chant to truly become embodied.

About the teacher/presenter:

Avra Shapiro (they/them) is a cultural organizer, liberatory educator, musician, and ritualist living on unceded Lenni Lenape land known as Philadelphia. They were ordained as a Kohenet (Hebrew Priestess) in 2020 and this greatly informs their work. Their music has been used in Jewish organizations and movements across the country. They have taught at spaces such as the Chicago Jewish Day School, Eden Village Camp, Base Hillel(s), Moishe Houses, college campuses, and synagogues from Reform to Modern Orthodox. They are thrilled to be serving as the Cantorial Soloist at Congregation Leyv Ha-Ir. Check out their offerings at Kohenetavrashapiro.com.
